INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & RIDERS

 

​Some advice for parents from Winton Lawton (founder of the ORCWA).

 

I’ve been involved in the sport of motorcycling for over 30 years.

I’ve raced myself, watched my kids race, been a volunteer, become an official and event organiser, and of course

formed this amazing club with the help of many people.

 

One of the best bits of advice I could give parents whose kids have decided this as the sport they want to do is –

invest in the sport.

 

Learn everything you can about the sport. After all it is what your kids are interested in. Don’t just sit on the

sidelines reading a book. Get out amongst it. Share their experiences.

 

Get set up. The amount of time you will spend packing and unpacking is a waste of time and takes the fun out of the weekend. Get a suitable enclosed trailer where you can leave the majority of the gear in, ready for the next event.

 

Camp out, if possible.  So many times I ask kids, what was the best bit about the weekend?

Every time it will be a story about the camping, playing with their friends and toasting marshmallows in the camp fire. Good healthy Fun!

 

Invest in some comfort.  This one definitely applies to me. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
What would I do differently? Set my family up to be comfortable.

I should have bought a large enclosed trailer or caravan, with comfortable beds, a place for all our gear and somewhere to sit out of the weather if needed. Somewhere the other half and kids, who may not want to ride, are comfortable.

Nothing beats being able to drive in and be set up within minutes.

The family will thank you for it.

 

I have made many life long friends and so have my kids, all through camping out and immersing myself in the sport.

 

Be a part of it. You’ll be glad you did.

Minimum Riding Gear

For the safety of all participants the following protective gear is absolutely compulsory: (Refer HERE to view the 2021 MA riding gear requirements)

 

• Helmets must carry the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) Approved label for AS1698 OR any F.I.M approved standard, as listed in the F.I.M Technical Rules, be in good condition & fit correctly. Helmet Cameras and helmet wraps are not permitted.

• Goggles

• MX style Nylon Pants

• Jersey

• Gloves

• MX style Boots

• Body Armour   (NOTE: All junior riders MUST wear armour with back protection.)

 

Bikes

Must have bar ends and bar pad to handle bar.

 

​Licence Requirements
All events are run under a perm it from Motorcycling Australia. All riders must hold either a yearly licence or purchase a One Event Licence.

 

 

​Temporary Guardian
In the event a parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a junior rider ("Minor") are unable to accompany the Minor, a DEED OF APPOINTMENT OF TEMPORARY GUARDIAN must be completed by parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and presented at time of registration on race day. Click HERE to print out a form.

​Class Changes

The class changes we introduced previously definitely made racing fairer & more fun for the riders.
This year we will continue with the same class formats pending we have the minimum numbers to run the class, including the Under 23 years class.

Please note that Trail Ride Class will not be available at all events. Please check the event pages for availability.

​Camping Out

Many parents have commented on how much they enjoyed the camping out at events.

 

We have discussed this with the landowners and they are happy to share their property by allowing camping on the weekend of the event. Always check the event information for individual details. Click HERE for Camping Guidelines.

It is a great way for the family to spend some time together, and the kids have a ball sitting around the campfire and telling each other about the days riding adventures.

​Parents Help

These events don’t happen without the help of a large number of volunteers.As one valued parent helper said, “the events are put on by parents, for the enjoyment of the kids”.We would encourage all parents to get involved and become part of the Offroad Riding scene.It’s easy, you’ll have fun, and your kids will appreciate it.
